New Law Allows Video Monitoring in Oklahoma Assisted Living Facilities

Oklahoma State Capitol

A state law that took effect Nov. 1 helps protect residents in assisted living facilities and continuum-of-care facilities, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Assisted living facilities can now allow video monitoring devices in common areas and rooms. Monitoring in nursing homes was already allowed.

“This legislation modernizes our state law to make sure all long-term care facilities are covered and prohibits eviction or retaliation against residents who use video equipment for additional safety and security,” state Sen. James Leewright (R-Bristow) said.

Backed by AARP Oklahoma, the law allows family members and guardians to check on the welfare of loved ones remotely, using technology.

The change comes amid safety concerns during the pandemic, as many nursing homes and long-term care facilities have halted visits
