AARP in Your Community - York

Red Community puzzle
Franck Boston

This spring has been a busy time for AARP Pennsylvania staff and volunteers across the Commonwealth. As the weather warmed up, so did activities in York. In addition to carrying on our community service work through volunteers, AARP has continued its partnership with key stakeholders on initiatives to ensure that York is a vibrant and enjoyable community for all. AARP has also been active on caregiver issues and fraud prevention. Here’s just a sample of what AARP has been up to in York:

Discounted Tickets at Strand Capitol Theater

During the last few months, AARP members and guests were offered discounted tickets to Strand Capitol Theater for showings including Invincible: A Glorious Tribute to Michael Jackson, Ailey II, and Ballroom With a Twist. AARP members and guests were encouraged to connect with AARP PA and learn about what we are doing in York.

If you have any ideas about discount offers with a local non-profit that you think would be of interest to the 50+ community in York, let us know!

Movies for Grownups

Since March, AARP has featured The Intern, Selma and The Big Short.

The Intern: The critically acclaimed movie stars Robert DeNiro as Ben Whitaker, a 70-year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway). The film tackles a variety of issues including ageism and sexism in the workplace; intergenerational relationships; marital pressures; and dating at 50-plus, among others.

Selma: The movie chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement.

The Big Short: When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to see – the global collapse of the economy – they had an idea. Their bold investment leads them into the dark under belly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. The film is based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis.

Many movie-goers signed up for our free Life Reimagined e-course offerings during these free movie screenings. To find out more about how to foster a life of courageous acts and inspired direction, visit Life Reimagined.

Caregiving Seminar

On April 8, AARP Pennsylvania was one of many organizations joining forces to deliver a seminar on caregiving to family caregivers across York County.  Over 100 family caregivers participated in the event to discuss caring for oneself as a caregiver, knowing what happens to your loved one as cognitive impairment begins, and what resources in the community exist for caregivers.

If you are a caregiver and would like to be invited to a September 22 event for caregivers please contact David Kalinoski.  This event will provide practical tips for caregivers and inform caregivers about resources that are available in York County.

Shred Fest 2016

On April 30, AARP showed up in the community to host one of many Shred Fest 2016 events. In conjunction with Continental Paper Grading and the York County Economic Alliance, AARP helped shred sensitive documents from 603 cars – for a total of nearly 19 tons of paper!  Staff and volunteers engaged with nearly 900 individuals, and over 500 people signed up to Fraud Watch Network alerts and further educate themselves on the increasingly pervasive practice of identity theft.

Shred Fest 2016 took place in almost 40 states across the nation in order to help people protect themselves from identify theft. York residents were invited to bring unwanted documents containing sensitive or personal information and watch them be shredded. This free event drew a tremendous crowd and kept the shred trucks grinding for four straight hours. AARP staff and volunteers were hard at work helping with boxes of documents, and encouraging people to   sign up  for   AARP Fraud Watch Network  to learn more about how to protect oneself from fraudsters.

Making a Difference - One Box at a Time

On May 20, AARP PA’s volunteers joined forces with the York County Food Bank to pack 300 food boxes - over 10,500 pounds of food - for distribution to needy 50+ community members across the county. AARP staff and volunteers visit the York County Food Bank once a month to provide this much-needed community service.

If you would like to volunteer and help members of our community who are struggling with food insufficiency, please let us know.
