AARP Pennsylvania has again partnered with PCN to bring you a monthly series of programs throughout 2024 centered on issues important to Pennsylvanians 50-plus. The series - "Focus on Aging Adults" - will feature guest experts joining with AARP leaders to discuss legislative and policy issues that impact older Pennsylvanians and their families.

This February, AARP Pennsylvania proudly participates in Cupid Crew, a heartwarming campaign to spread love and joy to older adults within our communities. With dedicated events planned in York, Pittsburgh, Lancaster, Philadelphia, and Lehigh Valley, our volunteers will deliver roses to older adults as a symbol of our appreciation and respect for their invaluable contributions to society.

As we step into 2024, AARP Pennsylvania reminds everyone to be vigilant against scams that continually evolve with technological advancements. The start of the new year is a prime time for scammers, seeking to exploit individuals through various fraudulent schemes.

A new 2023 AARP Fraud Watch NetworkTM report is highlighting the ways criminals target consumers during the holiday season. A majority (80%) of U.S. consumers say they have experienced some type of fraud this year – many of which ramp up over the holiday shopping season. These holiday shopping scams have increased from last year’s report, from receiving fake notifications about shipments, to online ad scams, and more. 

A staggering rise in fraudulent activities targeting veterans and service members has prompted AARP Pennsylvania to take a proactive stance against these scams. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), scams aimed at ex-service members resulted in a shocking $267 million loss in 2021, marking a staggering 162 percent increase from the previous year. To combat this alarming trend, AARP Pennsylvania is launching a comprehensive awareness campaign to help veterans and their families safeguard their financial well-being.

AARP Pennsylvania urges Pennsylvanians to use call screening as a powerful defense against scams. By letting answering machines or voicemail screen calls, individuals can significantly reduce the risk of falling for fraudulent schemes.

AARP Pennsylvania joined Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk, Allentown Mural Arts, and mural artist Hector Castro to unveil Allentown’s newest public art focused on healthy aging, diversity, and opportunity. The mural is in La Placita mini park on Hamilton Street, connecting the rapidly growing downtown and the city’s new waterfront developments.
