ICYMI: AARP in Your Community – Pittsburgh 2018

Scam Jam Program

On March 14, AARP Pennsylvania staff and volunteers teamed up with Westinghouse SURE to host an educational program aimed at addressing the major issues surrounding fraud, scams and identity theft that impact the 50+ community. The discussion was monitored by KDKA TV personality, Jon Delano. The event included speakers such as acting PA Insurance Commissioner Jessica Altman; Consumer Liaison of the PA Department of Insurance, David Buomo; and David P. Shallcross of the PA Office of the Attorney General. This event was organized by SURE member and AARP PA Volunteer Chair of the Consumer Issues Task Force, Mary Bach and Associate State Director of AARP PA, David Kalinoski.

 

Age-Friendly City Council Briefing

AARP Pennsylvania worked beside the Southwestern Pennsylvania Partnership for Aging on March 1 st to organize a Legislative Briefing at which 25 elected officials were represented. At the event, project leaders discussed the progress of the 30-point action plan that was unveiled this past October regarding the Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh initiative. University of Pittsburgh Basketball Sponsorship

AARP PA served as a sponsor for the University of Pittsburgh's basketball program for in-conference home games from January-March. The creative deal included significant in-arena signage, radio advertising and a social media component that offered members an opportunity to win an on-court experience fro Pitt's game against top-ranked University of Virginia. The agreement provided an excellent opportunity to

promote AARP's commitment to making Pittsburgh a more livable community for residents of all ages. As a bonus, our in-game signage was seen by ESPNU viewers nationwide through the UVA game. At halftime of the February 24 matchup between Pitt and UVA, Regional Vice President Rawle Andrews Jr. and State Director Bill Johnston-Walsh received a game ball for their sponsorship.

 

Tele-health and Advocacy Briefing

On January 19, AARP Pennsylvania hosted a special policy briefing for local AARP members and volunteers in order to teach about the how the advances in the field of telemedicine can improve access to healthcare services. At the event attendees were taught about how telemedicine technology can help bring medical expertise to those living in rural areas, as well as those who are isolated at home. AARP staff and volunteers encouraged those in attendance to advocate to their elected officials the importance of making telemedicine a key component of the healthcare system.
