June 2024
Greetings, It’s hard to believe summer is right around the corner. As we head into June, there’s a lot to look forward to, but also a lot to reflect on and be proud about. In this edition of the newsletter, you’ll find our helpful Voting Guide which highlights everything you need to know about how to participate in the upcoming June primaries. Time and again, research shows that voters 50 and older decide elections. That means your voice counts! In fact, many of you have already seen the power of your voice as you helped us make great strides on our 2024 legislative priorities at the State House. Check out what we were able to accomplish with your help in our 2024 legislative recap. As we continue to get out in communities across the state, we’re also gearing up for our Fraud Prevention Summer Series. The evens feature Paul Greenwood, a retired San Diego Deputy District Attorney who led the Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit for 22 years. He’ll offer tips on how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe from financial exploitation and scams targeting older adults. These events will take place July 8-11, with one online session and in person options in Charleston, Greenville, and Myrtle Beach. We hope you’ll register and join us. You may remember during the first part of the year, we encouraged you to fight Duke Energy’s proposed rate hike. Well, now we’re fighting a proposed rate hike from Dominion Energy South Carolina. You’ll find information in the newsletter on what the proposed increase would mean to you and how you can speak out. And finally, because fun and fulfillment are also a big priority for us, I want to encourage you to enter our Summer Tailgate Sweepstakes for a chance to win a 22" Blackstone gridle, an 8-quart Yeti Hoper shoulder carry cooler and two 40 oz. Stanley Quencher H2.O Flowstate Tumblers. As always, we want to connect on a deeper level and would love to add you to our volunteer family. You can always visit our website to learn more about available volunteer roles and how to get started. Here’s to a great summer! Charmaine Fuller Cooper State Director |
