Boosting Medicaid Personal Needs Allowance on Agenda

On the go

AARP South Carolina will advocate this year for lawmakers to increase the personal needs allowance in skilled nursing facilities.

The allowance is how much individuals on Medicaid for long-term care can retain of their monthly income for personal needs — things like shoes, undergarments and cell phone bills. Now $30 per month, it hasn’t changed since 1988.

South Carolina has the lowest personal needs allowance rate in the nation, alongside Alabama. For more information, contact scaarp@aarp.org.
