More than 9 million older adults in the U.S. struggle with getting enough food.
This is called food insecurity, and it can lead to hunger and serious health problems. Older adults who don’t have reliable access to nutritious food are more likely to face conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, asthma, and depression.
Helping People With Access To Healthy Food
The Utah Department of Health and Human Services offers several programs to help make sure everyone—especially older adults—can afford healthy food. The department offers many programs as a part of the Community Food Security Program and include:
- SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
- Double Up Food Bucks
- Produce Rx
- Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program
The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program gives $50 each year to eligible seniors to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at approved farmers markets, farm stands, senior centers, and other community locations across Utah.
According to the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, you may be eligible if:
- You’re 60 years or older
- Your household income is below 185% of the federal poverty level
- You haven’t received vouchers yet this year
