As our parents age, a quiet but meaningful shift often occurs—the roles begin to reverse. For adult children, this can be emotional and confusing.
You want to help without overstepping, protect while honoring their independence. For parents, accepting help after a lifetime of self-reliance can be difficult.
What I wish they knew is, there are a lot of complexities with this next stage of life, and caregiving is a huge piece of that.
This transition may start subtly—missed appointments, help with errands—or arrive suddenly after a health scare. However it begins, it’s rarely easy and often deeply emotional.
