nis Shoemaker of Tumwater has been selected to receive the  2015 AARP Washington Andrus Award for Community Service -- the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.

Dennis has been a devoted volunteer for Senior Services for South Sound since 2000, serving on their Board of Directors and as President. He has used his professional skills to grow a variety of needed programs. Under his leadership, Senior Services' annual auction has grown from $8,000 in revenue to over $130,000.

He is also active in his church community and he and his wife are team leaders for the local Cancer Relay for Life.

"My wife said when I retired, I couldn't do anything for a year," said Dennis. "I couldn't wait until that year was up. Volunteering has just been great. I love it!"

AARP Washington selected Dennis for his remarkable service which has greatly benefited his community, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers.  In honor of Dennis, AARP Washington will be donating $1,000 to the charity of his choice.

Dennis Shoemaker receives the 2015 Andrus Award from AARP Washington State President Mike Tucker.

“This award acts as a symbol to the public that we can all work together for positive social change,” says Mike Tucker, AARP Washington State President.  “AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve.”

In addition to Dennis, two finalists were also recognized. Larry Geringer of Gig Harbor was honored for his work with veterans and Julie Burger of Vancouver was celebrated for her years of service to military personnel and the American Red Cross. In honor of Julie and Larry, AARP Washington will be donating $500 each to the charity of their choice.

Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community in or for which the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
