Wallet Card Summarizes CARE Act

Governor Signs Mississippi Caregiver Act

A state law enacted last year can keep family caregivers better informed when a loved one receives hospital care. Even so, many Washington residents are unaware of the Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act and how it affects their lives. The AARP state office aims to ensure that Washingtonians understand the law and is distributing a wallet card summarizing the basics.

Every hospital patient has an opportunity to designate a caregiver. The hospital must record the caregiver’s contact information, keep the caregiver informed about plans to move or discharge the patient and, prior to discharge, show the caregiver how to perform follow-up care the patient will need at home.

AARP is encouraging members to download the wallet card at aarp.org/waCAREwalletcard and to consider in advance who to designate as a caregiver.
