AARP Take a Stand Opens Office Headquarters in Florida

St. Petersburg, Fla. — On Wednesday, June 29, AARP will officially open its Take a Stand Florida Headquarters in St. Petersburg, Orlando and Miami, to serve as a base for its staff and volunteers. Community leaders and policy makers will be present at the opening along with AARP representatives and volunteers.

Through its Take a Stand campaign, AARP is fighting to ensure that hard working Americans get the Social Security benefits they’ve earned.  AARP Florida Take a Stand staff and volunteers have already begun working diligently across the state.

“Being that we have the nation’s highest percentage of adults ages 65-plus, Florida has a huge stake in the future of Social Security,” AARP Florida State Director Jeff Johnson said. “Until now, Social Security hasn’t been a central part of the discussion during elections.  It’s time for that to change.”

“We at AARP are extremely excited to open three offices and bring on fifteen new staff members focused on Take a Stand,” said Lance Orchid, Florida Take a Stand Field Director. “These offices will be hubs for all Floridians who want to ensure Social Security is around for our kids and grandkids.”

The event is free and open to the public. Food and refreshments will be served.

WHY:
It’s a promise that’s been kept for generations. You pay into Social Security, you get the benefits you earned. But to keep that promise for future generations, Social Security needs to be updated for the 21st century.  More than 4.2 million Floridians receive Social Security benefits, many of whom rely on Social Security as their only source of income. If our leaders don’t act, future retirees could lose up $10,000 a year. Every year our leaders wait and do nothing, finding a solution grows more difficult.

For nearly 60 years, AARP has been fighting for Social Security, guided by our principles and our commitment to keep the promise for future generations. Fighting to ensure that hard working Americans who pay into Social Security get the benefits they’ve earned. With Take A Stand, we will keep working to make sure Social Security is solvent and strong.
