Requirements for all internship opportunities: Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Must be able to work a minimum of 14 hours per week. Must have excellent communication, organizational, writing, and computer skills, ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, and exercise initiative. (Bilingual in Spanish a plus.) This internship can be paid or for-credit.

Internship Opportunities:
Advocacy and Grassroots Internship
AARP Advocacy and Grassroots Interns are provided legislative education in both state and federal political spheres and gain first-hand knowledge of the New Jersey state legislature. Our advocacy work for the 50+ population gives interns exposure to real-world applications. Responsibilities include:
- Monitoring and researching legislative activities;
- Attending legislative hearings;
- Meeting with state/federal officials;
- Conducting research regarding legislative issues;
- Assisting with planning and implementing grassroots organization tactics and legislative advocacy activities;
- Working with advocacy staff and grassroots volunteers in all multicultural markets;
- Producing materials in relation to legislative activities, the media, and the public;
- Assisting with important non-partisan events.
Outreach Internship
This internship involves outreach and education to New Jersey 50+. This includes, but is not limited to, volunteer management, program development and design, the coordination of events and volunteers, public/media relations, and organizational communication. You will build your resume while gaining first-hand knowledge of how the nation’s largest non-profit organization works, develops and conveys its message to 40 million members across the United States. You will gain valuable work experience and expand your knowledge in the field by coordinating and participating in outreach and educational campaigns, while helping New Jerseyans. Responsibilities include:
- Creating and managing programs
- Design collateral materials for public education
- Support Coalition building efforts
- Volunteer Management
- Liaising with vendors and accounts department as needed
- Preparing materials to be distributed at events, such as flyers and outreach material
- Overseeing the event registration process from crafting messaging, invitations, capturing RSVPs and conducting follow-up communications
- Developing and distributing announcements and invitations
- Assisting with important non-partisan events, including community outreach events, legislative/advocacy events, press events and public forums
Social Media / Communications Internship
This internship involves communication initiatives directed toward AARP’s membership base, volunteers, and legislators. This includes, but is not limited to, public relations, media relations, message design, organizational communication, health communication, and mass media. You will gain first-hand knowledge of how one of the largest non-profit organizations works, develops and conveys its message to 40 million members across the United States. You will gain valuable work experience with an opportunity to participate in advocacy and outreach campaigns and expand your knowledge of the communication process “in the field.” Responsibilities include:
- Working with the Communication Director and other staff to create press releases, Op Eds, brochures, and other written materials for the media, general public, community organizations and legislators.
- Composing communication materials to be distributed to our members throughout the State of New Jersey via our databases and newsletters.
- Assisting with staff’s coordination of AARP branded items.
- Assisting with outreach and education initiatives.
- Assisting with important non-partisan events.
- Story collection on varying topics.
- Implement Social Media tactics
Event Planning Internship
This internship involves event planning and communication initiatives directed toward AARP’s membership base, volunteers, and legislators. This includes, but is not limited to, the coordination of events, public/media relations, program design, organizational communication and mass media.
You will gain first-hand knowledge of how the largest non-profit organization works, develops and conveys its message to 40 million members across the United States. You will gain valuable work experience with an opportunity to participate in advocacy and outreach campaigns and expand your knowledge of the communication process “in the field.” Responsibilities include:
- Creating event planning documents and facilitating/attending event planning meetings
- Managing a team of volunteers to assist with event planning
- Assisting with phone and email queries
- Liaising with vendors and accounts department as needed
- Preparing materials to be distributed at events, such as flyers and outreach material
- Overseeing the event registration process from crafting messaging, invitations, capturing RSVPs and conducting follow-up communications
- Develop and distribute announcements and invitations
- Assisting with important non-partisan events, including community outreach events, legislative/advocacy events, press events and public forums
Multicultural Outreach Internship (bi-lingual in Spanish strongly preferred)
This internship involves outreach, event planning and communication initiatives directed toward AARP’s membership base, volunteers, and legislators, particularly in the multicultural community. This includes, but is not limited to, the coordination of events and volunteers, public/media relations, program design, and organizational communication.
- Creating and managing programs catered and designed for volunteers
- Assisting and corresponding with teams of multicultural H/L volunteers
- Assisting with phone and email queries with NJ based newspapers
- Liaising with vendors and accounts department as needed
- Preparing materials to be distributed at events, such as flyers and outreach material
- Overseeing the event registration process from crafting messaging, invitations, capturing RSVPs and conducting follow-up communications
- Developing and distributing announcements and invitations
- Assisting with important non-partisan events, including community outreach events, legislative/advocacy events, press events and public forums
