AARP California is forming a Veterans Advisory Council to help us build a strategy for serving and working with veterans and organizations across the state. The Council will also review any veteran-related bills in the legislature and make recommendations to the state director on appropriate action. The ideal member will have experience in one or more of the following areas: general veterans’ issues, veterans with disabilities, self-employed veterans, veterans who are caregivers, young/student veterans, etc. This is a VOLUNTEER role. The AARP California Veterans Advisory Council will share professional insights and knowledge to inform the development of a strategy and provide guidance when working with veteran populations and organizations in California. The Advisory Council will prioritize and review any Veteran-related policies introduced in the California Legislature to recommend action or no action to the State Director who makes the final decisions on state advocacy. The Council will not have governance responsibilities.
- Align recommendations with AARP’s mission and priorities
- Serve a 2-year term beginning December 2018
- Actively participate in regularly scheduled call(s) and/or meeting(s)
- Respond to written communications when feedback is requested in a timely manner
- Share relevant veteran-related information/articles/events with the team
- Attend event(s) as needed
- Research community veteran-relevant work, events, and organizations
- Represent AARP at veteran-related community event(s) and participate on local veteran coalitions as identified
- Maintain knowledge of veteran-related issues
- Help develop AARP California’s 3-Year Strategy Plan for CA Veterans
- Work with area AARP metro staff to help develop work plans
Council members will represent identified geographic areas of California and have served in leadership roles in the military, regardless of rate, rank, or assignment. Each member will also have experience in one or more of the following areas: general veterans’ issues, veterans with disabilities, self-employed veterans, veterans who are caregivers, young/student veterans, etc.
The council will be made up of a maximum of 15 people. These individuals will be appointed through an interview process which includes the Staff Project Lead and Volunteer Chair.

- Thorough knowledge of veteran issues, needs, and activities
- Demonstrated professional leadership experience
- Ability to research information from a variety of sources within the state
- Ability to network towards the creation of new community partnerships
- Eligible for membership or associate membership in AARP
- Ability to work with diverse populations
