Why Build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)? Stories from Californians
ADUs have been legal in California since 2017 and provide a unique housing solution for many homeowners. Hear stories from some of California’s ADU adopters and how they benefited.

As small houses or apartments that exist on the same property lot as a single-family residence, Accessory Dwelling Units — or ADUs — play a major role in serving a national housing need. This traditional home type is re-emerging as an affordable and flexible housing option that meets the needs of older adults and young families alike.

ADUs have many benefits for older adults - including aging in place, housing caregivers, or providing necessary retirement funds - but homeowners are frequently overwhelmed and unsure about the ADU process. That's why AARP California partnered with the Casita Coalition to illustrate the positive impact of ADUs and the attainability of them. Hear stories from some of California’s early ADU adopters and how they benefited.
