Letʼs Take it Outside™ is an AARP California hosted virtual and in-person program that allows participants to learn about and explore various outdoor public places, spaces and activities.

Let's Take It Outside: Benefits of Nature (April 23 @ Noon - 1pm PT | Online)
Join AARP California and Nature Unplugged for a virtual discussion on experiencing the benefits of nature, different ways to connect with nature, and how much time in nature we need to experience the benefits. We’ll also be planning and preparing for our upcoming in-person nature outing on Saturday, May 4, at San Dieguito County Park, including: overview of route and park logistics, intro to location (history, flora, and fauna), and what to bring/wear. Let’s Take it Outside: Downtown San Jose Mural Walk (April 24 @ 10:45 am – Noon PT | San Jose)
Join AARP California for a leisurely walking tour as we explore some of the distinctive murals that adorn the buildings in downtown San Jose. Downtown San Jose is home to over 100 murals that highlight the heritage and diversity of the city. This walking tour, facilitated by Local Color, will showcase the creative spirit of downtown San Jose, and offer participants a deeper understanding of the city’s artistic vibrancy and the unique stories of the murals along Santa Clara Street. Let's Take It Outside: San Diego County Park Outing (May 4 @ 8:30am – 11am PT | San Diego)
Join AARP California and Nature Unplugged for an in-person nature outing where we’ll explore the local flora and fauna, practice mindfulness, and enjoy other outdoor activities to help learn about the benefits and connect with nature. This beginner’s level hike will be approximately 2-3 miles long on mostly flat, dirt trails. A non-mandatory online planning session for this event is scheduled for April 23. Let’s Take It Outside: Explore Angel Island (May 24 @ Noon - 3 pm PT | Angel Island)
Join AARP California for a leisurely hike at scenic Angel Island State Park and a guided tour of the Angel Island Immigration Station. Angel Island State Park, the largest natural island in the San Francisco Bay, offers stunning views of the surrounding Bay Area. This visit will begin with a 1.2-mile scenic hike from Ayala Cove to the Angel Island Immigration Station. The staff from the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation will then facilitate a guided tour of the immigration station that was once known as the “Ellis Island of the West” and has strong historical ties to Asian American communities in the region. After the tour, enjoy a leisurely hike from the immigration station back to Ayala Cove. Learn more and register HERE. This virtual event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Please note, the visit will require a hike of approximately 2.5-miles in total. Access to Angel Island State Park is by public ferry or private boat. All attendees will need to coordinate their own transportation to Ayala Cove where all arriving vessels to Angel Island State Park dock.

Let’s Take it Outside: Outdoor Movement & Play (July 31 @ Noon - 1pm PT | Online)
Join AARP California and Nature Unplugged for a virtual discussion on the mental and physical health benefits of outdoor movement and play in nature. We’ll also be planning and preparing for our upcoming in-person nature outing on Saturday, August 10, at Tijuana River Valley Regional Park, including: overview of route and park logistics, intro to location (history, flora, and fauna), and what to bring/wear. Let’s Take it Outside: Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Outing (August 10 @ 8:30-11 am PT | San Diego)
Join AARP California and Nature Unplugged for an in-person nature outing where we’ll focus on the mental and physical health benefits of movement and play in nature. This will include outdoor games, guided hiking, birding, gentle yoga, and other activities to help us bring a spirit of play to our time in nature. This beginner’s level hike will be approximately 2-3 miles long on mostly flat, dirt trails. A non-mandatory online planning session for this event is scheduled for July 31. Let’s Take it Outside: Community & Connection through Nature (October 9 @ Noon - 1 pm PT | Online)
Join AARP California and Nature Unplugged for a virtual discussion on how nature can help bolster our wellbeing while building community and connection. We’ll also be planning and preparing for our upcoming in-person nature outing on Saturday, October 19, at Oakoasis County Preserve, including: overview of route and park logistics, intro to location (history, flora, and fauna), and what to bring/wear. Let’s Take it Outside: Oakoasis County Preserve Outing (October 19 @ 8:30-11 am PT| San Diego)
Join AARP California and Nature Unplugged for an in-person nature outing where we’ll focus on how to build more community and connection in nature and how that can help bolster our wellbeing. This will include outdoor activities and games including a scavenger hunt and conversation cards to help connect us with each other as well as the natural world. This beginner’s level hike will be approximately 2-3 miles long on mostly flat, dirt trails. A non-mandatory planning session for this event is scheduled for October 9 at noon.
