Betty Gambino’s story began in the heart of New York City's vibrant Bronx borough where she lived until she moved to suburban Long Island to raise her four children. In 1997, Betty and her family relocated to Florida, where she worked for American Express. Upon her retirement, Betty found her true calling – a dedication to service and advocacy that would define her path for years to come.

In honor of April being National Volunteer Month, AARP Florida shines a spotlight on one of our most dedicated, Kathy Dalton Mayorga. Positioning herself as a major voice in Tallahassee for advocacy, fraud education and community outreach for the 50+ community, Kathy is a force to be reckoned with.

After a career in the Federal Aviation Administration, Ken Thomas these days performs a different kind of air traffic control: overseeing about 100 volunteers in their efforts to influence the Legislature on behalf of 2.8 million fellow AARP Florida members.

AARP Volunteer Shauna Smith, a retired college professor, is embarking on an inspiring mission to preserve Tallahassee’s rich history by collecting stories of people who have a connection to the Florida A&M University (FAMU) hospital. As part of city’s rich heritage, Smith is gathering stories to preserve a vital piece of Tallahassee’s history by archiving the stories of people who were born or worked at the hospital.
