In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, AARP Florida is highlighting just some of the many volunteers who honor their culture and make their communities vibrant and inclusive places for all. Today, we are thrilled to introduce Samuel and Alicia Ramirez, lead volunteers at AARP Orlando.

Recently, AARP released the 2023 Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Scorecard. This study finds that more than three years after the COVID-19 pandemic began, care provided in the United States for older adults and people with disabilities is painfully inadequate.

Eight Florida entities won 2023 AARP Community Challenge grants, totaling $102,000. The program funds projects aimed at improving community livability. This year's awards in Florida will help fund a mobile legal clinic, park restoration and asphalt artwork, among other initiatives.

In Orlando, thousands of concertgoers gathered at the Amway Center for the 2023 Salsa Festival, singing along to notable artists like Willie Colón, Ray Ruiz, El Gran Combo … and AARP! The festival, with its rhythmic beats and dynamic atmosphere, was the perfect backdrop for AARP Florida to debut our brand-new initiative – “Sights and Sounds of Heritage” – and engage guests on one of our most important topics, protecting Social Security.

TALLAHASSEE – Sept. 20, 2023 – Zayne Smith, Director of Advocacy for AARP Florida, has been recognized as being one of 41 exceptional women across the state for her accomplishments in government and public service.

When AARP volunteer Ira Turner took the mound at Jackie Robinson Ballpark this summer to throw the ceremonial first pitch at a Daytona Tortugas minor league game, he was right at home. Why? Because he was being honored as the AARP Volunteer of the Week on the very same field he played collegiately – just the start of his incredible professional baseball career.

Bob Busch readily admits he could survive without Social Security. Between his Air Force pension and savings, he has enough to get by. But as a certified volunteer AARP tax aide, he has helped hundreds of Floridians file their income taxes and knows that’s not the case for everyone.
