A Message from State Director Jeff Johnson: AARP Florida Shares 2024 Legislative Priorities

Old And New Florida State Capitol Buildings In Tallahassee

Just as New Year’s football bowl games are ending, we in Florida kick off a critical period in the state for older Floridians, with the 60-day 2024 Florida legislative session beginning January 9. This session presents an opportunity for lawmakers to address pressing issues, enact meaningful changes and contribute to the well-being of Floridians 50+.

If you followed news from AARP Florida last year, you’ll know our advocacy volunteers traveled to Tallahassee from across the state. They played a huge role in our successes in protecting consumers, expanding health security and enhancing housing options. By sharing their stories, they represented you and all AARP members and helped elected officials understand how their decision making directly affects older Floridians. This year, we are ready to welcome our AARP volunteer advocates back again and see how their passion and dedication can continue to make a change.

If you’re interested in learning more about what AARP is advocating for in Florida, you can find a full overview in our 2024 legislative priorities document. This one-pager highlights key focus areas for the upcoming session, including the need to reform Florida’s long-term care system, enhance quality of care and oversight in Florida nursing homes, expand home and community-based services and increase consumer protections.

This year, we anticipate the Florida Legislature will focus on the health care workforce, which is critically important to the state’s ability to provide quality health and long-term care to residents. Health security is a top priority for AARP and its 2.8 million Florida members, and we will continue to highlight the importance of high-quality long-term care as a component of health security.

As a non-profit, non-partisan organization, we are looking forward to advocating for older Floridians. We collaborate with legislative members and staff to provide subject matter experts who are well-versed in policymaking on long-term care, consumer protection and creating communities that are livable for all.
