As we close out National Volunteer Month, AARP Florida is proud to highlight an ongoing partnership in Volusia county that honors our volunteers for their hard work.
The Daytona Tortugas, the area's minor league baseball team, is on their third year partnering with AARP Jacksonville to recognize a Volunteer of the Month. Every honoree receives a special moment on the field where their achievements are shared with the entire stadium, and they throw the first pitch of the game.
"Recognizing our AARP volunteers through the Volunteer of the Month partnership with the Daytona Tortugas baseball team is incredibly important to us," explains Jill Auld, Associate State Director of Outreach & Engagement in Jacksonville. "Over the past three years, we have had the honor of celebrating 13 outstanding volunteers. This partnership not only highlights their invaluable contributions, but also provides a fun and special way for their friends and family to join in and cheer them on."
April 2025's Volunteer of the Month is Sheila Brown-Jefferson, a 9-year volunteer with AARP Jacksonville. An Army Reserve Veteran, Brown-Jefferson is a true model of service -- from her country to her local community. Her godson and goddaughter joined her on the field for her special moment, cheered on by other members of her family.
"It's such an honor to be selected," says Brown-Jefferson. "I love sharing AARP's message with anyone who I talk to, and I especially encourage them to volunteer with us. Becoming a volunteer is fun because we get to travel to new places, meet new people, and join a community."
Congratulations to all our past, present, and future AARP Jacksonville Volunteers of the Month! If you're interested in becoming an AARP Florida volunteer, please visit aarp.org/flvolunteer.
