March 2017

The city of Fort Lauderdale has a variety of amenities that make it a perfect qualifier for AARP’s Age-Friendly Community Network.

The city parks and recreation department oversees programs that benefit and involve teens, youth, adults and seniors. The city plans to continue their advancements in their age-friendly setup by continuing conversations with Club 55, a local group that talks about what they believe to be the four main aspects of age-friendly life: social participation, respect and social inclusion, community and information, and community and health services.

Not only is Fort Lauderdale a city interested in being age-friendly in the present, but they want older people’s input to also help shape the future. Club 55 holds monthly roundtable discussions open to everyone, with the hope that this back and forth will have many benefits for everyone involved.

A fifth of the city’s population is age 60 years and older, which means Fort Lauderdale has plenty of residents to work with in establishing itself as a leader of age friendliness on the Atlantic Coast. The city says it will take cues from other AARP Age-Friendly Communities as how it can replicate successful practice ans programs in Fort Lauderdale.
