Communities across Illinois are working each and every day to become more livable for residents of all ages.

More than 120 AARP members, volunteers and guests gathered today in Peoria to hear from their elected officials about the state’s fiscal crisis, economic security, caregiving and other issues important to Illinoisans 50-plus. State Senators Chuck Weaver (Senate District 37) and David Koehler (Senate District 46), State Representative Mike Unes (House District 91), and Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis participated in the legislative breakfast moderated by Brad McMillan, J.D., executive director of the Institute for Principled Leadership in Public Service, and co-hosted by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).

AARP Illinois will participate in a Grandparents Day celebration on Friday, Aug. 10, at Crest Hill Library, 20670 Len Kubinski Drive, in Crest Hill, about 40 miles southwest of Chicago. Grandparents and their grandchildren can celebrate from 10 a.m.-noon with an ice cream social, face painting, crafts and more. AARP Illinois is providing the ice cream.

AARP REQUEST FOR ARTIST PROPOSALS

(Alton, IL) AARP Illinois recently sponsored a legislative update breakfast at Senior Services Plus (SSP) as an opportunity for Alton and Southern Illinois residents to meet and interact with key elected officials. Participants had an opportunity to ask questions or share concerns regarding issues of importance to them, including Illinois’ fiscal crisis, caregiving, financial security, and health care.

Proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, are a class of drugs that treat acid reflux and peptic ulcers. The three most commonly prescribed PPIs are omeprazole, pantoprazole and esomeprazole. In recent years, some studies reported that PPIs increase risk for dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. We hear patients asking questions about this issue, so I’d like to clarify what we currently know about this risk.
