Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are residential living units on the same lot as a single-family or primary dwelling. AARP Iowa is working to expand access to this housing option by championing a statewide ADU law that would give all Iowans the right to build an ADU on their property, reducing unnecessary regulations and red tape.

Advocating on behalf of Iowans age 50+ and giving you a voice at the State Capitol is a top priority for AARP Iowa. During the 2024 legislative session, we engaged on several bills with wide-ranging impacts related to pedestrian safety, accessibility, utilities, long-term care, and more.
Iowa’s statewide primary election is Tuesday, June 4. Races include all four U.S. House seats, all 100 state House seats and 25 of 50 state Senate seats.

Larry Kudej of Swisher has been named AARP Iowa Volunteer State President and will lead the Association’s Iowa Executive Council, working closely with AARP Iowa State Director Brad Anderson, Iowa staff, and volunteers in their efforts on behalf of AARP’s 328,000 members in Iowa.

For the first time since AARP began publishing the Scorecard in 2011, more than half of Medicaid long-term care dollars nationwide for older adults and people with physical disabilities went to home- and community-based services instead of nursing homes and other institutions.
AARP Iowa worked with Republican presidential candidates to provide direct-to-camera, unedited responses to the question of how they plan to protect and strengthen Social Security if elected. Each candidate was given up to two minutes to offer their position.
