AARP Community Challenge grants fund quick-action projects that help communities become more livable by improving public places, transportation, housing, digital connections, and more.

During the 2026 state legislative session, AARP Iowa plans to engage in legislation across several key areas, including consumer protection, fraud prevention, financial security, long-term care, energy and livable communities.
An estimated 41% of American adults have lost money due to fraud or have had sensitive information obtained and used fraudulently. Scammers steal billions from consumers annually and fraud is a serious issue. AARP Iowa is committed to helping Iowans stay informed about how to avoid scams and where to find support and resources in the fight against fraud.

For nearly two years, Jessica Andino and her fellow affordable housing advocates have been making the rounds in Johnson County, urging local leaders to make it easier to build accessory dwelling units.
The Iowa Legislature’s 2025 session kicks off on Monday, Jan. 13, and AARP is seeking volunteers to urge lawmakers to enact policies to help improve the lives of older residents throughout the state.
Michael Wagler of Des Moines has been named the new AARP Iowa State Director, effective November 11. He will oversee operations of the Iowa state office, which includes a staff of four full-time employees and a volunteer advisory Executive Council that works on behalf of all Iowans 50+, including more than 329,000 AARP members statewide.
Six Iowa organizations received 2024 AARP Community Challenge grants, totaling $72,000, for improvement projects. They are:
AARP traveled across Iowa on a “Cruisin’ for Caregivers” RV tour to hear from all eight candidates for Congress on how they plan to support unpaid family caregivers. In each district, the candidate met with a family caregiver to learn more about their challenges and discuss potential solutions.
