Help Make a Difference in Your Community- Become a SHIIP Counselor

SHIP

Looking to make a difference in your community? We invite you to join AARP in helping older Iowans learn more about Medicare benefits by volunteering for the Iowa Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)*.  SHIIP is a free health insurance counseling service that help Medicare-eligible Iowans with their health and long-term care insurance needs. More information on SHIIP can be found here.

SHIIP counselors assist Medicare beneficiaries and their families with questions or problems related to Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance, long-term care insurance and other issues.  SHIIP counselors provide accurate, up-to-date, unbiased information and SHIIP does not promote products, services or programs.

Who: People with good listening skills, computer and internet capabilities and an interest in working with and helping others.

Time Commitment: Schedules vary based on hours of each local SHIIP site, but counselors typically volunteer about 4-8hrs per month. Counselors also participate in 36hrs of online and in-person initial training and 12hrs of update training per year.

Where: Volunteers are needed in your county.

How to Sign up: To find SHIIP volunteer opportunities in your community, call SHIIP at 1-800-351-4664 and ask for Judy Brannon. We hope you consider volunteering for this important program.

*SHIIP is a part of the State of Iowa Insurance Division and is not affiliated with AARP.  Any information you provide to SHIIP will be governed by their privacy policy.
