Most New Orleans residents 45 and older want to live in their own homes as they age, and AARP Louisiana aims to help make that happen.

AARP Louisiana today released new survey data highlighting the deep divide between Americans and Washington politicians over health care policies important to older Americans.

Most New Orleans residents age 45-plus believe that their community is a good place to age and want to live there independently for as long as possible, a recent AARP study found.

Seven out of 10 Americans turning 65 can expect to need long-term care during their lifetime, and 9 out of 10 Louisianans want to live at home as they age. Yet 70 percent of Medicaid funding for long-term care in the state goes to nursing homes.

On Tuesday, Nov. 29 AARP Louisiana presented State Senator Yvonne Colomb with the 2016 Legislator of the Year Award for championing issues that improve the quality of life for older Louisianans.

A new state law, which took effect Aug. 1, aims to ease the transition for family caregivers when a loved one comes home from a hospital stay.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a new AARP survey released today, 8 in 10 say that taking a stand on Social Security is a basic threshold for Presidential leadership. The survey of likely voters age 50+ also shows nearly 40% are dissatisfied with their retirement savings and nearly half of voters worry they won’t be able to achieve their financial goals over the next five years (49%). 4 in 10 (40%) still don’t know for certain which party’s presidential candidate they’ll choose in the 2016 general election.
