Seven out of 10 Americans turning 65 can expect to need long-term care during their lifetime, and 9 out of 10 Louisianans want to live at home as they age. Yet 70 percent of Medicaid funding for long-term care in the state goes to nursing homes.

Thousands of Louisianans won’t be able to enjoy the holidays at home because they are still recovering from last summer’s devastating flood. Considered one of the worst natural disasters since Superstorm Sandy ravaged the Eastern Seaboard in 2012, the Louisiana flood caused more than $8.7 billion in damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. About 150,000 homes in 26 parishes were damaged due to flooding.

Kathleen “Kathy” Brewer of DeRidder, Louisiana has been selected by AARP, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive the 2014 AARP Louisiana Andrus Award for Community Service -- the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.

AARP’s Livable Communities Council, the Center for Planning Excellence and the Lt. Governor’s Office announced today that Abita Springs Friends of the Park, the ReFresh Project, and the Young Leadership Council’s Where Ya’ Rack? are this year’s winners of Great Places in Louisiana.

For Eileen Kennedy a perfect day is sitting at the piano and playing until her heart’s content. You might say music is the centerpiece of her life having earned music degrees from Southern and LSU in Baton Rouge and raising two sons Rahni and Rajah who are also accomplished musicians.
