Advocating for Social Security

Jessica Linzer Simpson, 72, of Cape Elizabeth, spent her career helping people access their Social Security benefits, first as a claims representative and later as an adjudicator handling complex cases and training new employees.

Simpson is now retired, but as an active AARP volunteer, she’s keeping her focus on Social Security as the 2024 election draws near. AARP Maine will hold an in-person voter engagement training—with Social Security a key focus—in the early fall. Stay tuned for the date and registration info.

The training, which will be held in Augusta, aims to help new volunteers learn how to get candidates on the record about the retirement program’s solvency at town halls, debates and other public events, says Bridget Quinn, AARP Maine’s associate state director of advocacy and outreach.

Social Security is facing a dwindling reserve of funds; in about a decade, the program may not have enough money to fully cover benefits—unless Congress shores up its finances.

Quinn says getting candidates on the record is crucial. “People deserve to hear what their plans are, what they think and how they’re planning to work with their colleagues,” she says.

The number of Social Security recipients in Maine grew by more than 40 percent from 2002 to 2022, Social Security Administration data shows. In December 2022, more than 360,000 Mainers received Social Security benefits, taking home an average of $1,608 per month.

Simpson says the program “is absolutely critical” to keeping people out of poverty.

AARP Maine is also hosting Social Security ice cream socials this summer and has a booth at Portland Sea Dogs home games on Wednesday nights, where attendees can learn more about the program. Visit the "Get the Scoop" page for more.
