In a time when many Mainers face financial hardship, housing insecurity, and other life-altering challenges, Maine Needs has emerged as a powerful force for good. Founded in 2019 as a simple Facebook group, Maine Needs has grown into a dynamic nonprofit that connects community generosity with urgent needs—ensuring that no one in Maine goes without the basics.

Maine Needs’ mission is rooted in compassion and practicality: to help individuals and families meet their basic material needs—clothing, hygiene products, household items, and more. Their work supports asylum seekers, survivors of domestic violence, unhoused individuals, students, and anyone navigating a difficult season of life. Through partnerships with caseworkers, schools, nurses, and other social service providers, Maine Needs identifies what’s missing and mobilizes the community to fill the gaps.

What makes Maine Needs unique is its community-powered model. Volunteers, donors, and neighbors come together to give what they can—whether it’s time, money, gently used goods, or simply spreading the word. The organization doesn’t just ask for help; it inspires people to get involved in ways that feel personal and meaningful.

And the impact is growing. In just a few years, Maine Needs has expanded from a 2,000-square-foot donation center to a new 16,000-square-foot facility in Portland. This space will allow them to welcome more volunteers, store more donations, and respond more quickly to requests from across the state.

• Donate: Gently used or new items like warm clothing, hygiene products, and household essentials are always needed.
  
  • For older adults in particular, Maine Needs seeks household items such as sheet sets, comforters, bath towels, dishes, silverware and pots and pans.
• Volunteer: Help sort donations, pack kits, or assist with logistics at the donation center.
• Make a kit: Assemble themed kits—like winter warmth or school supplies—for families in need.
• Spread the word: Follow Maine Needs on social media and share their posts to amplify community calls for help.
