AARP is urging state lawmakers to expand Michigan’s Homestead Property Tax Credit. The credit, which was claimed by 27 percent of all Michigan households in 2023, provides a state-tax refund for qualifying homeowners based on factors such as household income and a home’s taxable value. Renters can claim the credit, too, on the assumption that a portion of property tax is passed on to them in rent.

The Silver Key Coalition, an organization formed a year ago to advocate for a remedy to Michigan’s chronic wait list problem for senior in-home services, has been named the winner of the 2014 Stephen J. Gools Award for Social Change sponsored by AARP Michigan.
AARP Michigan will present “A Taste of AARP” at the Holiday Inn of Marquette, 1951 U.S. 41 West, from 5-7 p.m. on Nov. 10.

Jackie Knapp of Kalamazoo is a committed volunteer activist who helps feed the hungry, raises money for veterans’ programs, and teaches Sunday school at her church. Now she is the 2014 winner of the Andrus Award for Community Service, AARP’s most prestigious and visible volunteer award.
"Finding Calm as a Caregiver," a program addressing the challenges and joys of caregiving, will be offered by the Caregiver Resource Network from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7 at 3215 Eaglecrest Drive NE, Grand Rapids.
