AARP Mississippi invites local eligible non-profit organizations and governments across the state to apply for the 2025 AARP Community Challenge grant program, now through March 5, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern. AARP Community Challenge grants fund quick-action projects that help communities become more livable by improving public places, transportation, housing, digital connections, and more. Now in its ninth year, the program is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which supports the efforts of cities, towns, neighborhoods and rural areas to become great places to live for all residents, especially those age 50 and older.
The names of the first 10 Medicare drugs whose prices the federal government will negotiate directly with manufacturers were released Aug. 29. Popular but pricey blood thinners, diabetes medications, cancer treatments make historic list.

With the state legislative session getting underway, AARP is advocating for Medicaid expansion, allowing an estimated 125,000 Mississippians to gain health coverage. The expansion would be largely funded by the federal government; Mississippi is one of 10 states that has not already done so, under provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

Jackson, MS - On the eve of the 78th anniversary of the creation of Social Security, which provides an average monthly retirement benefit of about $1,170 to 375,000 Mississippians, AARP Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond issued the following statement:
Yesterday, AARP Mississippi released the first in a “commonsense solutions” series of new videos on the 48th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson signing Medicare into law on July 30, 1965. Mississippi has 369,000 residents who rely on Medicare for their health care coverage, on average spending $5,000 of their income on out-of pocket health care costs. AARP volunteers and staff from every state, visited Capitol Hill today to express opposition to the President’s proposed Social Security benefit cut known as Chained CPI and to support responsible solutions to strengthen Medicare. Meeting with Senators, Members of Congress and their staff, AARP volunteers urged their representatives to have a separate debate on Social Security and to back specific proposals that would strengthen Medicare and the health care system overall.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, AARP sent the following letter in support of the newly proposed Preventing and Reducing Improper Medicare Expenditures (PRIME) Act (H.R. 2305/S. 1123), legislation that seeks to curb fraud, waste and abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
AARP Mississippi will conduct a free HomeFit Workshop at 10 a.m. at the Bancorp South Conference Center on Saturday, June 8 in Tupelo. The workshop will explain techniques to design and update your home to support your needs and lifestyle at any age.
