AARP New Jersey Applauds Governor Murphy for Action on Property Taxes

Urges Municipalities to Extend Payment Deadlines Now

Statement from AARP New Jersey State Director Stephanie Hunsinger

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – “On behalf of AARP New Jersey’s nearly 1.3 million members, we applaud Governor Murphy and his administration for issuing today’s Executive Order 130 that allows municipalities to extend the property tax payment deadline from May 1 to June 1.

These are extremely difficult times, with more than 850,000 New Jerseyans suffering from COVID-19 related furloughs and lay-offs. Many New Jersey residents need help just to meet their basic needs. During this time of financial uncertainty, we are pleased Governor Murphy has taken this action to grant municipalities the authority to extend the grace period for property tax payments until June 1. We hope all New Jersey municipalities act immediately to provide relief to their residents.

Because of our current health and fiscal crisis, New Jersey has frozen the Homestead Benefit and “Senior Freeze” property tax relief programs many have come to rely on. These programs had provided much needed property tax relief for hundreds of thousands of homeowners – especially in a state where the average property tax bill in 2019 was more than $8,900.

The property tax extension will further promote public health, financial relief and peace of mind for Garden State residents. We commend the Governor and the administration for taking action to support New Jerseyans in this challenging time.”
