In these times of unprecedented financial stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many New Jerseyans are struggling to meet their basic needs, including their electric, gas and water utility services. AARP New Jersey has been fighting for the hundreds of thousands of New Jersey families who were at risk of losing these vital lifeline services as utility companies began sending shut off notices last month. AARP New Jersey called on Governor Murphy to extend the moratorium on utility shut offs during the public health emergency.

AARP New Jersey applauds the October 15, 2020 announcement by Governor Murphy that no household in New Jersey will have its electricity, gas or water shut off for non-payment through March 15, 2021.

The Governor also announced that if a customer’s electric, gas or water service has been disconnected during the public health emergency, the service is required to be restored at no cost to the consumer.  For more information, you can read about the announcement here or review the Governor’s Executive Order here

In addition, the moratorium on the disconnection of internet or voice service has been extended through November 15, 2020. Before internet or voice service can be shut off, cable providers must offer an interest-free, 12-month repayment plan to allow customers to repay via equal payments rather than one lump sum. No down payment or deposit can be required to enroll in the payment plan.

Additionally, no cable or telecommunications provider may disconnect the internet service for any New Jersey household with one or more school-aged children that utilizes the residence for educational purposes.

New Jersey offers a number of utility bill payment assistance programs. You can contact your utility to find our more information as well as the NJ Board of Public Utilities.

AARP New Jersey will never stop fighting for you and for your health, safety and financial security.
