Rising Property Taxes: AARP Offers Recommendations to Ohio Statehouse

Access to affordable housing, as well as needed services and opportunities for residents of all ages to participate in community life, is crucial to Ohioans.

We are working with the Ohio legislature to provide targeted relief from property taxes that have skyrocketed from the rise in property values throughout the state. Those taxes, while critical to the well-being of our communities and the funding of vital services, can be a significant financial burden when calculated on the assessed value of the residential property, and not on one’s ability to pay.

Our advocacy team recently shared recommended approaches for property tax relief with the Ohio General Assembly, in advance of the work starting next year in the Joint Committee on Property Tax Review and Reform, created in the recent budget bill.

We have long supported property tax relief that is fair, cost-effective and targeted to homeowners who are most financially burdened by their property tax bill. Targeted tax relief can preserve our communities while maintaining essential revenue by doing the following:

  • Helping residents stay in their homes as they age.
  • Preserving housing affordability and stability.
  • Protecting long-time residents from gentrification and discrimination.
  • Ensuring continued funding for vital services.

Look for updates as we develop solutions to offer property-tax relief to Ohioans 50-plus.
