Volunteer with AARP for 9/11 National Day of Service in Cleveland

The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance promotes community service as a tribute to the victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks. Each year AARP staff and volunteer from across the country observe this day by giving back to those in need in their local communities.

"Sometimes, our neighbors fall on hard times, and become physically or financially unable to care for or repair their own homes," said Associate State Director of AARP in Cleveland Doug Tayek. "In Cleveland, our goal for this 2019 National Day of Service is to provide the hands and resources to help make those homes safe and livable again. Your volunteer efforts can make a difference in people’s lives."

On Wednesday, September 11, join AARP Ohio in our Day of Service partnership with Rebuilding Together Northeast Ohio, University Hospitals, the Cleveland NAACP Branch and local area churches, as we work to repair and revitalize the homes of four older adults in Cleveland’s Lee/Harvard neighborhood.

Volunteer shifts are flexible. You can sign up for the whole day, or choose a three-hour slot. The earlier shift begins at 9 a.m. and last until noon and the second option starts at noon and ends at 4 p.m. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. You do not need any advanced knowledge of home repair or construction to participate. Register by calling 1-877-926-8300 or online by visiting aarp.cvent.com/OH_Rebuilding_Together091119.

"We want everyone to be able to volunteer. Volunteers do not need to be skilled at home repairs. We have lots of opportunities for you whether that be running supplies to different sites, helping to finish up a paint project, organzing supplies, or checking volunteers in," said Tayek.

Possible projects could include repairs such as general cleaning or organizing; interior and exterior painting; laying new carpet or securing area rugs; repairing flooring; door bell repairs or replacement; repairing siding or roofing; installing grab bars in bathrooms or installing handrails on porches and many more needed repairs that make a home safer.
