AARP Foundation to match contributions, dollar for dollar, up to $500,000

WASHINGTONAARP Foundation today announced a disaster relief fund to support victims of wildfires across Western states and Hurrican Sally.

AARP Foundation will match contributions, dollar for dollar, up to $500,000. One hundred percent of all funds raised will be directed toward organizations providing relief and assistance to those in need in the stricken areas.

Fires raging up and down the West Coast have forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes and seek safety. With many of the fires not fully contained, states continue to battle catastrophic wildfires that have burned millions of acres of land and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses.  In addition, Category 2 Hurricane Sally struck the Southeast Coast last week with torrential rain and flooding, causing widespread damage and leaving more than 510,000 people without power.

“The needs along the West and Gulf Coasts are urgent, especially for vulnerable older residents who were already experiencing hardships,” said AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh Ryerson. “Support from generous donors will allow AARP Foundation to deliver up to $1 million or more to organizations on the ground helping older adults with low income get back on their feet in the wake of the wildfires and Hurricane Sally.”

AARP Foundation is currently accepting tax-deductible donations through its secure website. To donate or learn more about AARP Foundation’s Relief Fund, visit www.aarpfoundation.org/disasterrelief.
