Safe streets are essential for livable and thriving communities, especially as we age. On average, people outlive their ability to drive by 7 to 11 years, depending on gender. That means we need transportation systems that offer more than just car travel. We need walkable neighborhoods, accessible transit, and safe biking routes to ensure everyone can stay mobile, connected, and independent.
According to a 2024 report from Smart Growth America, older adults re among the groups at highest risk of injury or death while walking, alongside people with disabilities, people of color and those in low-income areas. That’s why AARP Oregon is proud to partner with BEST (Better Eugene-Springfield Transportation) for an exciting set of events focused on creating safer, more inclusive streets. Together, we’re bringing national experts from Smart Growth America to Eugene on Thursday, November 13 for a day of learning, community engagement, and action.
These events will spotlight opportunities to improve safety and expand mobility options in key areas like Highway 99 and River Road neighborhoods where thoughtful planning can make a real difference in people’s lives. Whether it’s safer crosswalks, better bike infrastructure, or more accessible public transit, we’ll explore how smart growth strategies can help Eugene become a more age-friendly and equitable city.
We invite community members, advocates, and local leaders to join us in shaping a future where everyone- regardless of age or ability - can move safely and confidently through their neighborhoods.
