Greater Salem Area Volunteer Team Invites You to Get Involved

Volunteer

By Lesley Johnson

Our thoughts go out to so many of our Marion County members from Santiam Canyon who suffered through the September wildfire disaster.  It touched all of us in some way, but those of you losing your home/community have been affected in the worst, unfathomable way.  There are no words; our hearts are heavy.

We miss seeing all of you at tabling events and Movies For Grownups.  Remembering good times: Eighty of you joined us on a float down the river on the Willamette Queen in October in 2019.

The Salem Team has been meeting virtually monthly since March, discussing ways to hook into the state and national virtual opportunities for AARP members.  Happily there are a plethora of happenings.

Salem has been able to present two virtual events partnering with Salem City Center 50+ as part of a “brown bag” series: Staying connected to Your Community. The first in August focused on “Age-Friendly Communities” and in October “Remaining in Your Home”.  This month the topic is “Learn About Your Options”.  See the details of the November 18th noon to 12:30 pm free event and how to register.

Are you thinking you might like to get involved volunteering virtually with your local AARP? Please contact Lesley Johnson if you would like more information on volunteering, or if you would like to shadow our monthly Zoom planning meeting.

We are always looking for new ideas and input into where our efforts should lie.  Also, we are noodling with the idea of regular, casual Zoom meet-ups with AARP members who are not necessarily interested in volunteering, but have issues or questions related to aging or caregiving or … whatever.  Let me know if this sounds like something that might be of interest to you.

Take full advantage of AARP membership benefits and keep enjoying being a lifelong learner. Write to us to learn more at oraarp@aarp.org
