AARP Oregon has worked for many years with community colleges around the state. Whether you are recareering, learning a new skill or refreshing a subject you love, lifelong learning is a key component to healthy aging (Ageing Soc. 2018)

To make it easier for older adults to access classes, Portland Community College offers discounted tuition for Oregon residents who are 62 or older. All classes are offered online fall and winter terms so you can learn from the comfort of your own home as you explore subjects that intrigue and delight you.

Credit classes

Older adults get free tuition for credit classes when taken for an audit grading option. Auditing is taking a class without receiving a grade or credit. You can only audit a class if there are still seats available on the first day of class. This 100% tuition waiver does not cover lab fees or other class fees. Many classes fill up early, so space is not guaranteed.

Community Education classes

Older adults receive a 50% tuition discount on Community Education classes. The discount does not apply to lab and other class fees. (Limited grants are available to those unable to afford the reduced tuition rates. To apply for a grant, contact Sharon Mouton-Sibley at 971-722-2886.)

Visit our website to find out how to use your discount to enhance your skills and knowledge through challenging and intellectually stimulating educational programs.

Senior Studies Institute

You should also check out the learning opportunities that the Senior Studies Institute (SSI) offers.

SSI is an all-volunteer PCC program that provides presentations, discussions and other events mainly designed for older adults. SSI was founded in 1991 by Neal Naigus of Portland Community College and a group of older adults dedicated to lifelong learning. It has since grown to more than 300 members.

SSI provides an opportunity for older adults to share in the exploration of topics of mutual interest, to contribute their experience and their expertise, and to expand their circle of friends.

Visit the SSI website to learn more.
