AARP Eye Center
Extra support from a caring older adult helps children thrive academically. AARP Experience Corps is an intergenerational program that focuses on helping children become great readers before finishing third grade. Metropolitan Family Service, a non-profit serving the Portland area, is actively recruiting volunteers who are 50+ for the AARP Foundation Experience Corps program to tutor children in select Eastside, North Portland and Milwaukie public schools.
AARP Experience Corps volunteers tutored over 1,200 sessions with kids from 1st through 3rd grade this past school year. Older adults switched from in-person tutoring and paper timesheets, session logs and surveys to everything being done virtually. They did so with patience, perseverance, and grace. Relationships were forged that became crucial for the students for literacy and for building resilience during an extremely challenging and often lonely year.
This coming year is shaping up to be just as challenging and we welcome more wonderful tutors on the AARP Experience Corps team to provide virtual or in-person reading support to young elementary school children.
Helping Children
Volunteer mentors commit to four or more hours per week throughout the school year. Those able to commit eight hours or more may receive a monthly stipend. No formal experience is needed, just the desire to help children succeed. Training and ongoing support are provided and a real community is created every year between tutors, students, school and program staff. We all work together in support of kids and the love of reading.
