Due to scheduling challenges and concerns from the participants and community members about the event taking place on Rosh Hashanah, AARP Virginia has canceled the 97th District candidate forum that was set to take place between Delegate Michael Feggans and former delegate Tim Anderson on Tuesday, September 23, at the Kempsville Area Library in Virginia Beach.
“This would have been an excellent opportunity for voters in the 97th District to hear directly from the candidates about the issues that matter most to them,” said Jim Dau, AARP Virginia’s state director. “But we understand that the candidates and members of the community were concerned about holding the event on an important Jewish holiday, and unfortunately, we simply weren’t able to find another day that worked for both campaigns.”
The candidate forum was initially scheduled to take place on September 18, but had to be rescheduled when the event venue determined it wouldn’t be available. AARP Virginia then worked with the campaigns, and both committed to the September 23 date. AARP Virginia has attempted to find a later date for the forum, but determined the earliest possible opportunity would be too late in the election cycle.
“For decades, AARP Virginia has worked to ensure that Virginians over 50 have the resources and information they need to make informed decisions at the ballot box,” Dau said. “We’ll continue working with both candidates in this race to provide voters with information on their plans to address important challenges ahead of Election Day.”
