According to Adult Protective Services (APS), there were 1,016 substantiated cases of financial exploitation in Virginia in 2015. In APS’ review of 76 sample cases they found an average per case loss of $27,782, meaning Virginia could have lost a total of more than $28 million collectively.
For victims the losses are more than just the numbers after the dollar sign. They undergo severe emotional distress, depression, loss of independence, and even a shortened lifespan.
Help us take action against Financial Exploitation by strengthening the laws. Help APS and financial institutions identify and respond to financial exploitation by broadening the definition, removing language that requires a person to be “incapacitated” to be considered a victim and redefine “financial institution staff” to be more inclusive.
