About 40 people attended the AARP Smart Driver Program on October 14-15 at the West Neck Community Center. Lunch was provided on both days.

The program was coordinated by WNLC member Francie Rayburn.

The AARP Smart Driver Course, offered by AARP Driver Safety, is the nation's first and largest refresher course designed specifically for older drivers. The course provided research-based information to help update driving knowledge and skills. It is the law in the state of Virginia that insurance companies must give a discount to those who attend this program. Some give 5% and others give 10%. The course is valid for a period of three years. Loretta DiCamillo was the AARP instructor for this course. She was a superb instructor who interspersed the content of course with humor and anecdotes.

She explained the course objectives and covered these topics:

- Our changing selves and how these changes affect our driving
- Practices that make us safe
- Fundamental driving strategies
- Travel options for mobility and independence
- Key lessons learned

In addition to her presentation, she recommended this website: www.aarp.org/drc
