Throughout 2024, AARP DC continued to advocate for policies to empower District residents to improve their lives and choose where and how they live as they age. AARP DC has a long history of supporting older District residents who want to live independently as they age. The city of Washington, D.C. utilizes a "strong mayor" and city council system. In this form of municipal government, the city council serves as the city's primary legislative body while the Mayor serves as the city's chief executive officer. At-large council positions represent the entire District. The Washington, D.C. City Council is the city's primary legislative body. The council votes on and drafts legislation, approves the city's annual budget and sets the revenue required to fund the budget. Additionally, the council appoints members to boards and commissions and gives the final say on appointments made by the Mayor.

On Sunday, September 11th and Monday, September 12th, AARP DC volunteers and staff participated in the AARP Foundation's Celebration of Service Meal Pack Challenge. This year's Celebration of Service event paid tribute to all the veterans and retired first responders who have given so much of their lives in service to others. It also lifted senior poverty out of the shadows and shined a spotlight on the needs of older adults who are struggling to secure the essentials. With the help of over 3,000 volunteers, we packed 1.5 million meals for our region's struggling seniors!
