More than 48 million Americans, including 74,000 here in the District, are family caregivers. It is one of the most important jobs we will ever do, and one of the most difficult. Family caregivers help their older parents, spouses and other loved ones live independently – managing medications, preparing meals, helping with bathing and dressing and so much more.
Throughout 2024, AARP DC continued to advocate for policies to empower District residents to improve their lives and choose where and how they live as they age. AARP DC has a long history of supporting older District residents who want to live independently as they age. This year, AARP DC fought for issues that matter most to seniors, their families and caregivers.
Living Unequally: Disrupting Health Disparities in the District
AARP Foundation Experience Corps trains volunteers, age 50 years and over, to tutor and mentor more than 30,000 Pre-K to 3 rd grade students throughout the country. This is an excellent volunteer opportunity for adults in DC looking to get involved and make a difference in their neighborhood!
DC Water residential customers may save as much as $800 a year if you qualify for new customer assistance programs. There are different levels of assistance for low to moderate income customers, as well as seniors living on fixed incomes.
Wednesdays at the Wilson Building (W@W) is a video series that provides brief updates on the current state of the District, encourages advocacy and connects policy experts to District residents.

AARP is excited to announce 159 awards as part of its 2019 AARP Community Challenge Grant program, including two grantees in the District of Columbia: Community Foodworks and Safe Routes Partnership. Learn about their projects to increase access to healthy food and make the District more livable for residents of all ages.
AARP is proud to co-present Lawn, an immersive installation at the National Building Museum now through September 2, 2019. AARP members are eligible for a ticket discount, and invited to two free AARP Movies for Grownups film screenings this August!
District residents should feel secure in the knowledge that the law protects their valuable assets from fraud. The proposed Uniform Power of Attorney Act (UPOAA) not only modernizes District law but would also act like a permission slip for the Power of Attorney (POA), financial institutions, and community creating distinct rules that protect seniors and vulnerable individuals.
