Participants from the Mayor’s Council for People with Disabilities (MCPD), AARP Wyoming, and the Cheyenne City Engineers Office will take part in a walk audit of Capitol Avenue in Cheyenne at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21.
A Walk Audit is defined by AARP as an activity in which participants observe and evaluate the walkability of a location to identify and document if and how pedestrians can safely travel along a street, navigate an intersection, and get from Point A to B and C and so on.
The Walk Audit will begin at 9 a.m. at 19th Street and Capitol Avenue. The team will go up to 24th street, then proceed back down Capitol Avenue on the south side of 19th Street. Members of the MCPD will be accompanied by Sam Shumway, Wyoming State Director for AARP, City Councilman Pete Laybourn, and Cheyenne City Traffic Engineer Rick Amen.
Portions of the Walk Audit will be photographed and videotaped, as the Walk Audit human experience data will be collected and documented on AARP Walk Audit worksheets and given to the City of Cheyenne Engineering Department. The data collected can be utilized in the plan to update Capitol Avenue.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with the Mayor’s Council for People with Disabilities and AARP, because they present a unique perspective which can be incorporated as part of the plan to attract new business and property owners for the continued revitalization of Cheyenne,” said Rick Amen, Traffic Engineer for the City of Cheyenne.
