AARP Colorado Presents El Movimiento: The Chicano Movement in Colo.

Colorado has a rich history of Chicano activism during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and AARP Colorado, along with the History Colorado Museum and Regis University, are keeping that history alive through oral-history recordings, digital collections and stationary exhibits and an event to kick off a celebration of those significant contributions.

The event, El Movimiento: The Chicano Movement in Colorado, is made up of an exhibit of displays in the Museum atrium, 1200 Broadway in Denver, and a program on the contributions of the Chicano movement in the 1960s and 1970, followed by a reception. The event will be Wednesday Sept. 25, 5:30-8 p.m. and it is open to the public. However, space is limited and tickets will be available on a first-come basis. To R.S.V.P., or for more information, contact AARP Colorado rrey@aarp.org or at 303-318-6763.

In addition to the program presentations, AARP is currently soliciting displays (of photos, posters, banners etc.) that could be viewed prior to the program and during the after-program reception.

The event falls during Hispanic Heritage month (September 15 — October 15) and will be complemented by an effort to collect oral histories, which would become part of the History Colorado Museum online collection with copies also kept at the Center for Study of War Experience at Regis University. We also will seek to make digital copies of the displays for inclusion in the museum's collections.

People who have stories about, or were involved in, the Chicano Movement in Colorado should contact AARP to help create a historical bank of recorded histories. To record your experience as it related to the Chicano Movement in Colorado, please contact AARP Colorado  at rrey@aarp.org or call 303-318-6763.
