Hitting the Streets in Maplewood

What do you think it takes for a community to be more livable?

Recently Maplewood residents and business owners along with city officials took part in an AARP Active Living Workshop which included AARP volunteers. The purpose of the workshop was to share with attendees what makes a more walkable and livable community.

The group took a short “walk audit” through the community. During the audit, possible improvements and enhancements were noted which were used to create a wish list to help make the city of Maplewood an even better place to live, work and play.

1. Organize a walk audit in your community

2. Support the Complete Streets movement
Complete Streets puts focus on all modes of transportation, whether by car, public transportation, bicycle, wheelchair, or on foot. The movement strives to provide safe alternatives for non-drivers and also make roads safer and more convenient.  Local communities like Florissant, St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Ferguson, Clayton and University City have enacted a Complete Streets Policy or Ordinance. AARP in St. Louis is currently working with additional communities in the St. Louis region interested in Complete Streets.

Missouri has become a leader in the national Complete Streets movement. Along with neighborhood advocates, AARP is proud to be a supporter of this important legislation.
