AARP Eye Center
By Phil Zarlengo, AARP Volunteer Transitions alumni coordinator and former AARP Board chair
Through our volunteer work with AARP over the years, we have been part of what Ethel Percy Andrus called “an army of useful citizens.” Though we may not be as active with AARP as we once were, I suspect that you share deep interest in what the organization is doing and discovering ways that we can continue to give back to help our local community.
One easy way to stay in touch with AARP about key activities and initiatives is through the monthly volunteer conference calls (also known as teletown halls.) These one-hour calls are held on the last Thursday of each month at 7 PM ET and you just dial 877-209-3531 to join. The next call will be on October 27 and you can be sure that there will be robust discussion and Q&A with volunteers about the presidential election and potential impact on AARP matters. Recordings of each call are also posted onto the Volunteer Portal – click on the Libraries tab and search TTH.
The Create the Good website continues to be a terrific tool to find volunteer opportunities from various organizations in your community. I particularly like to encourage local non-profits in my area to log onto the site and use the free tool to post volunteer opportunities that they have for their efforts. It’s truly a win-win situation for all!
You are a valued part of the AARP family of volunteers, and I hope you find ways to stay informed and active! You continue to make our communities better for all.
