During the first months of 2019, multiple counties across Alabama have seen destruction by mother nature. From tornadoes to floods, our friends and family have been affected in all corners of our state.

Join AARP Alabama for a new walking program at Railroad Park (1600 1st Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35233). Jerri Haslem will lead the pack as we walk our way to better health. The group meets at the pavilion, Monday and Tuesday evenings at 6:00 PM and Thursday morning at 6:00 AM.

AARP is now accepting applications for the 2019 Community Challenge grant program to fund “quick-action” projects that spark change in local communities. The grant program, which is now in its third year, is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which aims to make communities great places to live for everyone.

Two communities in the state have won AARP Community Challenge grants that will help pedestrians, bicyclists and those who enjoy parks.

On Friday, November 10, AARP provided lunch and gifts honoring over 100 veterans at Via Health Fitness and Enrichment Center in Mobile. The lunch included a special thank you address by Dorothy Dorton, AARP Alabama Associate State Director for Community Outreach. The Murphy High School JROTC Color Guard presented the colors. The event included a Quilt of Valor presentation to Navy veteran Bill Woolley and a big band singer performing patriotic songs. AARP also provided attendees with booklets and materials from the AARP Fraud Watch Network on fraud and scams that specifically target veterans. Thank you to all the veterans who came out to celebrate Veterans Day with us in Mobile today!

Older Americans are embracing digital technology more than ever. Four in 10 Americans 65-plus have smartphones, while a third own tablets and a fifth have e-readers.

Mobile, AL – AARP Alabama, with its more than 430,000 members, announces the appointment of Dorothy Dorton, MS CTRS, to the position of Associate State Director for Community Outreach. Dorton, a Mobile native, will provide outreach and support for AARP programs and initiatives in Mobile and parts of lower Alabama, working with volunteers and maintaining AARP’s relationships with residents and community leaders in that part of the state.

Take some steps toward better health with the new walking group in Montgomery, sponsored by AARP. This group will walk each Tuesday and Thursday at Ida Belle Young Park, 5400 Vaughn Road, beginning May 2 at 7 a.m.

AARP Alabama is teaming up with the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, WPMI Local 15, and the Mobile Bay Bears for a FREE public Shred-A-Thon on Saturday, April 22 from 9 AM to 1 PM at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile. Bring up to three bags or file boxes of documents to be shredded on-site by Shred-it.
