Six communities throughout Minnesota will receive 2025 Community Challenge grants. The grants are part of AARP’s $4.2 million commitment to fund quick-action projects aimed at making communities more livable for people of all ages, with a focus on the needs of older adults. The AARP Community Challenge funds innovative projects that inspire change in areas such as public places; housing; transportation; and more.

Governor Shapiro’s state budget proposal included an increase of $20 million for the PENNCARE line item, which is the funding that supports older adults in their communities through local Area Agencies on Aging. While we sincerely appreciate the proposed increase, it is not enough to ensure that older adults receive the services and supports they need to age in place. More is needed — $30 million — to serve a growing aging population at home, where they want to be. According to AARP’s latest “Home and Community Preferences Survey,” older adults overwhelmingly want to stay in their homes (75 percent) and communities (73 percent).
